According to collegesanduniversitiesinusa, the educational history of Saint Kitts and Nevis dates back to the 17th century with the arrival of British settlers. The earliest schools were established by religious organizations such as the Anglican Church and the Moravian Church. These schools provided basic education in literacy and numeracy, and also offered religious instruction. In 1834, a government-funded school system was established which provided free primary education to all children aged 5 to 14 years old. This system was expanded in the late 19th century with the introduction of secondary education, although this was only available to a small number of students due to limited resources. In 1956, Saint Kitts and Nevis gained full internal self-government from Britain, and in 1967 it became an independent nation. Since then there has been a steady expansion of educational opportunities for all citizens. Primary education is now compulsory for children aged 5-14 years old, while secondary education is available at both public and private institutions. There are also several tertiary institutions that offer higher level qualifications in a variety of disciplines. In recent years there has been increased investment in educational infrastructure as well as teacher training initiatives in order to improve standards throughout the country’s schools and universities. In 2009, Saint Kitts and Nevis was a small, independent nation located in the Caribbean region. It was a member of the United Nations, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The country had close ties with its neighbors in the region, particularly with its closest neighbor, Antigua and Barbuda. There were also strong economic ties with countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Politically, Saint Kitts and Nevis was a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The Prime Minister held executive power while legislative authority rested with both the Prime Minister and Parliament. The judiciary was independent of both executive and legislative branches of government. In 2009, Saint Kitts and Nevis had strong diplomatic relations with other countries in the region as well as further afield. It was active in regional organisations such as CARICOM which sought to promote economic development throughout the Caribbean region. At an international level it worked closely with countries such as Canada to promote issues such as human rights protection and climate change mitigation. In addition to its diplomatic activities, Saint Kitts and Nevis also had a number of military agreements in place at this time which allowed for cooperation on security matters between itself and other countries in the region such as Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Grenada and Dominica. These agreements focused on areas such as maritime surveillance operations against drug trafficking activities as well as disaster relief efforts during natural disasters or other emergencies.
