In response, the United Nations imposed multiple sanctions on North Korea which had a significant impact on its economy. In spite of this aggressive posture towards other countries, North Korea also engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at improving relations with major powers such as China and Russia. The government sought increased investment from both countries in order to help revive its struggling economy.
