According to collegesanduniversitiesinusa, the educational history of Micronesia is a long and varied one. It is a region composed of over 600 islands and atolls spread across the western Pacific Ocean. The inhabitants of these islands have had a long and complex relationship with education, beginning with the earliest settlers who brought their own knowledge and skills to the islands as well as those acquired through interactions with other islanders. The first formal school in Micronesia was established in 1811 in the Chuuk Lagoon by Spanish missionaries, although there were informal schools that existed prior to this. Education was mainly focused on religious instruction and literacy training for boys, while girls were often excluded from schooling altogether. In 1899, Germany took control of many of the islands in Micronesia and set up a system of compulsory primary education for all children aged 6-14 years old. This system was further improved upon when Japan took control of many of the islands after World War I and established an extensive network of primary, secondary, and technical schools throughout Micronesia. After World War II, the United States assumed control over much of Micronesia as part of its Trust Territory Agreement with the United Nations. They implemented an ambitious plan to provide free public education for all children between kindergarten and 12th grade throughout the region. This included providing scholarships for students who wished to pursue higher education such as college or university degrees abroad. Today, education in Micronesia is still largely provided by government institutions including public elementary schools, high schools and vocational training centers. However there are also private institutions such as Christian academies which provide religious instruction as well as secular studies like math and science. In addition to this there are also a number of universities located on some of the larger islands which offer degree programs for both local students as well as international ones seeking higher learning opportunities in Micronesia’s unique environment. In 2009, Micronesia was a nation made up of 607 islands located in the western Pacific Ocean, just north of the equator. It was comprised of four island states – Chuuk, Pohnpei, Yap, and Kosrae – as well as two self-governing territories – the Marshall Islands and Palau. The country had a population of around 107,000 people and its official language was English. Its capital city was Palikir on the island of Pohnpei. The economy of Micronesia in 2009 was largely based on subsistence farming and fishing with limited exports such as copra (dried coconut meat) and some manufactured products such as fishnets. The country also relied heavily on foreign aid from countries such as the United States, which provided over $100 million in assistance annually. In terms of education, there were several public elementary schools across all four states and two self-governing territories that offered free education to students up to 12th grade level. There were also several private schools offering religious instruction alongside secular studies such as math and science. In addition to this there were also a number of universities located on some of the larger islands which offered degree programs for both local students as well as international ones seeking higher learning opportunities in Micronesia’s unique environment. In terms of healthcare, public health facilities were available throughout Micronesia but they lacked basic equipment and supplies due to limited resources. This meant that many people had to rely on private healthcare services which could be expensive for families living below the poverty line or those without insurance coverage. Overall, Micronesia in 2009 faced many challenges including poverty levels that remained stubbornly high despite government efforts to improve economic conditions; an aging population; limited resources for public health services; lack of access to quality education; environmental degradation; and rising sea levels due to climate change which threatened many low-lying islands with potential inundation or erosion in the future.
