According to collegesanduniversitiesinusa, Guyana’s educational history is long and varied. Prior to British colonization, the indigenous people of Guyana had a highly developed education system that was passed down through generations. This system focused on teaching the children of the tribe about their culture, language, and history. After British colonization, the educational system shifted away from its traditional format and began to focus on English language instruction as well as European-style education. This shift in education was further solidified when Guyana gained its independence in 1966. Since then, education in Guyana has made great strides towards becoming more inclusive and accessible for all citizens. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure such as schools and universities to ensure that everyone has access to quality education. In addition, efforts have been made to make sure that students from all backgrounds can take advantage of these opportunities regardless of their financial situation or ethnicity. Furthermore, programs have been implemented to help students with disabilities receive an appropriate education that best meets their needs. As a result of these efforts, Guyana’s literacy rate is now at 93%, making it one of the highest in Latin America and the entire Caribbean region. In 2009, Guyana’s geopolitics were in a state of flux. In the wake of a historic election, the new government was faced with many challenges, both internally and externally. Internally, Guyana was dealing with a weak economy and an inefficient government bureaucracy. Externally, Guyana had to contend with its traditional rival, Venezuela, which had just undergone a change in leadership. This shift in power made it difficult for Guyana to maintain its neutrality as both countries sought to gain influence over the region. At the same time, Guyana was also seeking closer ties with its neighbors in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to help strengthen its economy and promote regional unity. This effort was largely successful as Guyana joined forces with other Caribbean nations to fight against poverty and inequality across the region. Additionally, Guyana worked closely with CARICOM members to develop trade agreements that would benefit all parties involved. Finally, 2009 saw Guyana embrace its role as an international leader in environmental protection and conservation efforts. To this end, the country signed onto several major international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol and committed itself to reducing emissions from deforestation and land use change by 20% by 2020. In addition, it established several protected areas within its borders that are dedicated to preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development initiatives throughout the country.
