According to collegesanduniversitiesinusa, Ethiopia has a long and varied educational history. As one of the oldest countries in Africa, Ethiopia has a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations. This heritage has been reflected in the country’s education system, which dates back to the time of the Ethiopian Empire (1270-1974). During this period, education was largely confined to religious institutions such as monasteries and churches, where students were taught basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as religious doctrine. The modern-day education system in Ethiopia dates back to 1895 when Emperor Menelik II created a new school system based on European models. This system included primary schools for boys and girls, secondary schools, and teacher training colleges. During this period, education was largely centralized under the government’s control; however, there were also some private schools established by religious organizations or foreign missions. In 1974, following a military coup that overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie’s government, Ethiopia adopted a socialist ideology and its educational system underwent significant changes. Education became free for all citizens up to grade 8 and emphasis was placed on technical education over academic studies. In addition, adult literacy classes were introduced as part of an effort to reduce illiteracy rates among the population. In 1991 with the fall of the socialist government in Ethiopia came further reforms to its educational system. The new government introduced a decentralization policy which gave more autonomy to local authorities in managing their own educational systems. In addition, it allowed for more private involvement in providing quality education services by introducing private schools and universities alongside public ones run by the state or local governments. Furthermore, it established an accreditation body for higher education institutions which ensured that standards of teaching were maintained at these institutions across all levels of study. Today Ethiopia still faces challenges related to access to quality education due to factors such as poverty or lack of infrastructure; however there have been significant improvements over recent years due to increased investment from both international donors and local authorities in improving access and standards of teaching within its educational system. In 2009, Ethiopia was still in a period of transition as it emerged from a civil war that had lasted for several decades. During this time, the country was struggling to rebuild its economy and political system while maintaining a fragile peace. The government was largely dominated by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), which was an alliance of four ethnic-based political parties created in 1991 to overthrow the previous Marxist regime. As such, the EPRDF held considerable power and influence within Ethiopia’s politics, though there were other opposition parties active at the time. The Ethiopian government had also taken steps to ensure economic stability through various economic reforms. These included privatizing state-owned enterprises and liberalizing foreign trade and investment regulations. In addition, Ethiopia had begun to attract foreign direct investment from countries such as China, India and Saudi Arabia, which helped to bolster its economy while increasing its international presence. Moreover, Ethiopia had engaged in a number of peacekeeping operations throughout the region in order to foster regional stability, such as assisting with Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government in 2009. Finally, Ethiopia remained an important member of international organizations such as the African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN). Check mathgeneral for Ethiopia in 2017.
