According to collegesanduniversitiesinusa, Portugal’s educational system has been in place since the early 19th century. The country’s first law on education was issued in 1836 and established the basis for a unified system of public education. This law established compulsory elementary education for all children, free of charge and regardless of gender or social class. It also mandated that secondary education would be provided to those who had completed their elementary studies. Primary school typically lasts five years and is followed by three years of lower secondary school, which is mandatory. After completing lower secondary school, students may choose to pursue upper secondary school either through a vocational or academic route. Vocational schools offer technical training while academic schools provide more traditional academic courses. In addition to these traditional educational institutions, Portugal also offers a number of private schools as well as international schools catering to expatriate students and those wishing to pursue an international curriculum. Higher education is offered at universities and polytechnics, with most institutions requiring that applicants have completed their upper secondary studies before applying for admission. Portugal has made significant strides in recent years towards improving its educational system, including increases in both primary and higher education enrolment rates as well as an increased focus on quality assurance measures within its educational institutions. In 2009, Portugal was a member of the European Union, having joined in 1986. The country was also a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Portugal was part of the Schengen Area, allowing for free movement of citizens between member states without passport checks. Portugal’s foreign policy during this time focused on strengthening its ties with other EU countries and promoting economic development within its own borders. Additionally, Portugal sought to strengthen its ties with other Latin American nations in order to promote regional stability and cooperation. On the domestic front, Portugal adopted a number of measures to address its economic crisis, including increasing taxes and introducing austerity measures. The country also undertook significant reforms in the areas of healthcare, education and labor market regulations. These reforms were intended to improve competitiveness and attract foreign investment into the country. In terms of international relations, Portugal maintained cordial relations with many countries around the world and actively participated in multilateral organizations such as NATO and the United Nations (UN). It also sought closer ties with African nations through initiatives such as Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP). Portugal’s relationship with Spain remained strong during this period and both countries continued to cooperate on matters such as border control and counter-terrorism operations. In addition to Spain, Portugal also maintained good relations with many other European countries such as France, Germany and Italy. Check militarynous for Portugal Military.
