The alternative operating system in the test
Is there still room for another system next to the two largest operating systems for smart phones (iOS and Android)? The fact is that the team around Windows Phone has created something completely new. But whether this is good or bad is shown (hopefully) today’s test.
First of all, this is, of course, a matter of taste. You can see, however, that it has been tried here to create a completely new smart phone experience via PhoTionary.
The design contains lots of loving details and is great. Due to the consistently fluid animations and the very typographic-heavy design, an ease is imparted to the use.
In addition, the system offers some possibilities for personalization. In the settings, for example, you can select which color you prefer. If one chooses pink the appearance is mainly held in pink.
The start screen consists mainly of a (freely selectable) photo/image, on the left-aligned main information such as time, day & date, as well as upcoming appointments are placed.Slightly smaller are information such as missed calls, new SMS and e-mails. In the upper section, some more unimportant information such as reception and battery status appears. If you get a new message, the start screen bounces around a bit, so you are encouraged to push the picture up to read his text message.
Live Tiles (Tiles)
The special thing about the system are probably the live tiles. The Kacheloptik is indeed taste, but brings neat life into the smart phone shack. The live tiles update automatically, are animated and very nice to look at. As a tile, any application can be placed on the start screen so you can customize your start screen to your own requirements.
However, not only applications but also program pieces can be stored as a tile on the start screen, which is a very special highlight. For example, the current favorite song or the 8:15 pm program overview from the TV application can be stored on the start screen and is available at any time via fast access.
Unlock the screen by sliding the screen saver upwards. Then the tiles (Live Tiles) appear. If you wipe to the right, an overview of all applications appears in the form of a list. You can navigate back through the hardware button (back arrow), which not only returns you to the start screen, but through all previously called steps.
Via the Windows logo you get back to the screen with the tiles.
The Microsoft operating system offers a kind of multitasking. This allows users to leave apps without terminating them. However, the application does not continue in the background but is stopped until the next call.
Active apps can be accessed by pressing the return key.
Contacts can be pinned as tiles on the front screen. If you add his contacts to the appropriate social channels, these become lively contact tiles. Here, the status messages, SMS and calls of the desired person are collected and presented.
Contacts can also be grouped (similar to Facebook’s lists). For example, you can send a message to your friends group and have saved yourself a lot of work because you do not have to select each one individually. The group can of course also be placed on the Homescreen.
calls are accepted by pushing the screen upwards and then pressing either on decrease or reject. One step too much in my opinion, it is at first somewhat confusing when you are used to other systems. Also the ending of conversations generated at the first moment confusion since with a times a lot of boxes are displayed (hang up, mute, hold, etc.) in which the eye is not able to capture them so quickly. However, this is probably a habit.
In the news area, SMS, e-mails and chats are placed in one place.
As a standard browser, Internet Explorer is integrated as a whole in the system. This basically offers everything you expect from a browser but the operation requires a little getting used to.For example, the browser bar is at the bottom of the screen.
Apps & Market
Currently there are about 80000 apps in the market. Although this is not comparable to the number of apps in the Android Market (450000) or the iOS Store (550000) but the growth is fast and the base is there. The most important applications are in the market or there is an alternative application.
In the range, the applications are divided into games, music, highlights, and so on. This creates the feeling of a real depth/abundance of the market so you do not even notice that the store may have fewer apps than comparable.
One of the main features of Windows Phone is the Xbox Live integration. The center point is the avatar, which can be redesigned from the bottom up to the top (eye color, clothes, shoes, etc.) and the one from then on accompanied by the system (and dances at appropriate points or joy). In addition, in the application game requests, offers of the week and their own game collection are gathered.
Use the search button (the magnifying glass) to get to Bing. There is a new photo every day on which the search bar is placed. At the bottom are three buttons that allow you to analyze songs/music (like Shazam), barcode/QR scanner, and voice control. The speech recognition surprisingly works quite well. As results, however, only Bing search results are displayed and no sly or funny answers given as for example with Siri, which is of course a bit unfortunate.
The quality of the photos depends of course on the hardware, so which smart phone is. In this point I would like to go to the software page. The camera can only be activated via the hardware button on the right, unfortunately it can not be started by an App-Schnellzugriff.Once you have started the camera, you can start shooting with the photos. Of course the camera also offers an icon for video function. In addition to these variants, a further setting option is available. For example, scenes: here you can select a large number of different scenes for different lighting conditions (eg night, candle light, sport, etc.). Furthermore, the application offers a wide range of additional settings such as white balance, exposure value, ISO, measurement mode, effects, flash, etc. One of the most comprehensive photo applications I have ever seen. Another app for photo processing will probably hardly be necessary here.
When you have taken photos or videos, a minimal border appears on the left side of the last photo. This one is easy to wipe in and so goes into the photo gallery. Photos can be easily optimized by autocorrecting, set as background or send to the cloud.
There are various functions, such as notes or more complex things, such as Excel, PowerPoint & Word applications.
At the beginning it is of course strange to have something new in the hand and everything seems so strange. But the longer you use and personalize the more you learn to love it and almost do not want to return to the iOS or Android world. So why the obvious failure? Apparently, the prejudices against Microsoft are too big, the market share of iOS and Android too powerful and if Microsoft is throwing the rifle into the grain at an early stage, it was probably with Windows Phone. I hope the Microsoft still perseverance proves, because with Android it took a long time until it was where it is today. Perhaps the one or the other after this test also like to get a Windows Phone device to watch. I would like the whole thing a success very much! In connection with the right hardware, Windows Phone sure to convince even so many Applejünger.
