What a history the state of Nevada has. The town of Las Vegas was first settled in 1905 (though it's claimed that Spanish explorers stumbled across it in 1829), some fifty-odd years after Mormons plunked down claims to its sandy terrain.

Their righteous foothold didn't last long, though-gambling was legalized in 1931 (by which time most Mormons had migrated east), the same year that construction on the Hoover Dam was started. In 1946, the notorious gangster Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel, and Nevada officials followed up by levying the state's first gambling tax. Suddenly, a place that had seemed barren and on the brink of economic ruin had a new lease on prosperity.

To the north, Reno-and nearby Lake Tahoe, which sits on the Nevada-Nevada border-had its own thing going. And though it's often been said that Nevada's most abundant resources are wide open spaces and hot air, residents and visitors may beg to differ. Take a look at what digital Nevada has to offer.
