Guides to Montana

It's called "Big Sky Country" and "Land of the Shining Mountains." Anyone who's ever traveled through this great western state knows precisely the meaning of these words. There's something about the skies out here. They just seem...bigger, somehow broader and bluer and filled with billowy clouds the likes of which most of us have seen only in our dreams. Mosey up to Glacier National Park and you'll see what we mean about the mountains. Sure, a lot of states have mountains, but have you ever seen them so green and golden, all at once? Even the eastern half of the state, which comprises part of the Great Plains, is deceptive: The seemingly flat lands are dotted with mountains, mesas, buttes and canyons, which seem more reminiscent of Arizona than the Montana we think of to the west.

Cities? Montana's got 'em, though folks around here might wince at the thought of being too terribly urbanized. After all, Montana's population density is less than one-tenth the national average, making it one of the least populated states in the country-a fact made all the more interesting when you consider that Montana is the nation's fourth largest state. Montanans like their wide-open spaces, whether they're planted in cities like Missoula or Butte (where the balance of the rugged outdoors with urban conveniences may surprise you), or tucked away in a tiny hamlet like Box Elder or Wise River. Whatever your pleasure, Montana's bound to be big enough to accommodate it
