Guides to Maine

Maine is about as far north as you can go in the U.S. without getting into Canada, and though it seems pretty small in comparison to a lot of states, it actually makes up about half the area we think of as New England...which says a lot about the size of the other New England states. This is fishing and wildlife country, to be sure; but alongside the famous Maine lobsters you may be dreaming about, the state is also one of the largest potato-producing regions in the nation (hey-ho, they don't all come from Idaho).

You might think that all this spud-growing and lobster-potting would keep people out of the cities, but not so: Hot spots Portland, Bangor, and Lewiston host nearly 400,000 of Maine's 1.3 million residents. And culture? Portland's symphony is considered one of New England's finest, while stars of both stage and screen cut their teeth on annual summer stock productions in Maine's resort areas. And don't forget Kennebunkport, site of the Bush vacation home and the subject of all sorts of mispronunciations and misunderstandings. It's all as close as the click of your mouse.
