Guides to Arkansas

Named for a little rock in the Arkansas River (honest), this state's capital has delivered a lot to the world. Consider the famous Old Mill featured in the opening credits of the classic film Gone With the Wind, or the stately home of television's Designing Women-it's not located in Atlanta as the show's creators would have us believe, but in downtown Little Rock. Two little girls from Little Rock, Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe, rocked the world's backwoods perception of Arkansas in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and America's first family called the city home for many years before moving to Washington.

But Arkansas has a lot more to offer than the politics and pop culture emanating from its capital-it's also "the Natural State." With the exception of an ocean front, Arkansas covers almost all the geographic possibilities: There are the forest-covered mountains and valleys of the Ozarks, the remarkable waters of Hot Springs National Park, and the lush farmlands and plains of the south. This natural landscape thrives on water from the state's many lakes, as well as the White, Arkansas, and Mississippi Rivers. For culture, few areas can match the pickin' and fiddlin' of the Ozarks's best bluegrass musicians, and nearby Fayetteville is home to a thriving arts and literary scene. Seems the hillbilly world of Al Capp's "Dogpatch" is long way from the Arkansas of today.
